Mr. Calvert was first elected as an NDP MLA from Moose Jaw in 1986 and served there until 1999. After becoming leader in 2001, Mr. Calvert was elected as the NDP MLA for Saskatoon Riversdale where he currently resides. Mr. Calvert served as a Cabinet Minister from 1992 until 1998 in the New Democratic Party government of Premier Roy Romanow. He held a number of portfolios including Associate Minister of Health, Minister Responsible for the Wakamow Valley Authority, Minister Responsible for SaskPower and SaskEnergy, Minister of Health, Minister of Social Services, Minister Responsible for the Public Service Commission, Minister Responsible for Seniors and Minister Responsible for the Office of Disabilities. Mr. Calvert was elected Leader of the New Democratic Party of Saskatchewan on January 27, 2001, and assumed the duties of Premier on February 8, 2001. He was elected as the MLA for Saskatoon Riversdale in a by-election in March, 2001, and was re-elected as MLA and Premier in the November, 2003, general election. Premier Calvert and his wife, Betty, have two children. |
